. The languages or dialects spoken by the people living on both banks of the
River Indus had different names in different areas, these were Punjabi,
Siraiki, and Sindhi, Remains of Harrappa and Mohenjodaro reveal that
people of ancient Indus Civilization had learnt the art of writing.
. After the advent of the Muslims, Arabic script was adopted for local languages.
Sindhi was the first South-Asian language the Holy Quran was translated into.
Chach Naama is the first living masterpiece of Sindhi literature.
Ismaelite preachers did great service to Sindhi language from the mid of the
. 11th century to the mid of 14th century. They devised a Sindhi script which
had 52 letters. The same script was used by the early Urdu writers. Amir
Khusro’s Khaliq Bari was written in the same script.
Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai (1689-1752) is the greatest Sindhi poet, his book
.”Shah Jo Risalo is his eternal masterpiece. Sachal Sarmast was another
contemporary of Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai. In addition to Sindhi he also
composed poetry in Hindi, Urdu, Siraiki, Punjabi and Persian, his couplets

In the same period a religious scholar and great prose writer Makhdoom
