State Solvent can be in any state (solid, liquid, gas), but most commonly in liquid form. Solute can also be in any state but is typically in solid or gas form when dissolved.
Examples Water in a sugar-water solution. Sugar in a sugar-water solution.
Role It dissolves the solute to form a solution. It is dissolved by the solvent to form a solution.
