Kashmiri literature has a strong Islamic background. Muslim preachers
started reaching Kashmir immediately after the advent of Islam. Centuries
later 37 thousand Kashmiri non-Muslims embraced Islam with the efforts of a
great Muslim saint Shah-e-Hamadan. He was an excellent poet and a man
of letters. It was his imprint on Kashmiri language and literature that gave it
Islamic colour and character.
