Explain the process “Roasting” with two examples.

Roasting is a process of heating metal ores in the presence of oxygen, typically to convert sulfide ores into oxides and release sulfur dioxide gas. It is commonly used in the extraction of metals from their ores.

1. Zinc Sulfide Roasting:
Zinc sulfide (ZnS) is roasted in the presence of oxygen to form zinc oxide (ZnO) and sulfur dioxide (SO₂):
Zinc oxide can then be further processed to extract zinc metal.

2. Copper Sulfide Roasting:
Copper (I) sulfide (Cu₂S) is roasted in oxygen to form copper (I) oxide (Cu₂O) and sulfur dioxide:
The copper oxide can then be reduced to copper metal in subsequent steps.
