A Vernier caliper is a highly accurate instrument used for measuring the dimensions of objects. The instrument consists of two main scales: the main scale and the Vernier scale.

Construction:

  1. Main Scale: The fixed scale that is graduated in millimeters or centimeters (depending on the model). It is usually marked with primary divisions.
  2. Vernier Scale: A smaller scale that slides over the main scale. It is graduated in such a way that it can be used to measure fractions of the smallest division on the main scale.
  3. Jaws: The caliper has two sets of jaws: one pair for measuring the external dimensions (such as length or diameter of an object), and a second pair for measuring internal dimensions (such as the inner diameter of a pipe).
  4. Depth Rod: This is a thin rod that extends from the bottom of the caliper and is used for measuring the depth of holes or grooves.
  5. Locking Screw: This allows the user to lock the sliding Vernier scale in place to keep the measurement fixed during reading.

Working:

The object to be measured is placed between the jaws of the Vernier calipers. The external jaws are used for external measurements, and the internal jaws are used for measuring internal dimensions. The main scale provides the first reading, showing the whole number of millimeters or centimeters. The Vernier scale, which slides along the main scale, allows the user to find the fraction of a millimeter or centimeter. The Vernier scale’s precise reading is added to the main scale’s reading to get the final measurement.

For example, if the Vernier scale shows an additional 0.02 mm (based on the position of the Vernier scale’s divisions), and the main scale shows 5.30 cm, the total reading will be 5.32 cm.

This method significantly enhances the precision of measurements by allowing readings to be taken to a fraction of the smallest division on the main scale.
