Ans: Parvez Musharraf’s Government (1999 – 2008):
After overthrowing Nawaz Sharif’s government on October 12, 1999 Parvez
Musharraf dissolved the National and the provincial assemblies, suspended
the constitution and created a new office of Chief Executive for him. Elected
president Rafiq Tarar was forced to resign on June 20, 2001. General
Parvez Musharraf called a referendum which was conducted in an
atmosphere of suspicion about its fairness. On the basis of this referendum
General Parvez Musharraf took over as president on April 30, 2002. Later
the Supreme Court passed a verdict and authorized the president to bring
about constitutional and social ‘reforms’ within a period of 3 years.
